The San Diego Theatrical Training Trust Fund is an employee/employer managed trust fund dedicated to the training of employees represeted by IATSE Local 122.
The SDTTTF is established under the Labor Management Relations Act, or “Taft-Hartley” Act, which is a law that allows employers to contribute to employee benefit trust funds for pensions, health plans and other benefits, including training. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act, or “ERISA,” also governs the operation of the Trust.
Under the Act, the Trust Fund must be operated by a board of Trustees from both employers and the union (IATSE Local 122), each side having equal voting power on all decisions. The employees represented trustees are elected by the IATSE Local 122 membership through the same system union officers are elected. Note, these representative are NOT union officers. They are trustees who represent IATSE 122 at the trust meetings. The employer trustees are elected by the employers who pay into the trust fund and are normally nominated and elected through an electronic poll. Currently, the employees and the employers each have two (2) trustees who sit on the board. The Trust and its board are independent from both the Local and the employers. The Trustees also retain various professionals to help operate the Trust, including an administrator, attorneys, accountant and banks. These professionals are paid for directly by the trust fund.
The Trustees establish various policies and training programs, and update them from time to time at periodic Trust meetings (Quarterly), to address emerging issues related to the industry and goals of the Trust.
The SDTTTF provides funds to be used for a variety of industry training oppertunities. These can be used to provide funding for IATSE hosted classes, individual training, bringing in outside educators to provide member training, training facilities, purchasing equipment to be used for educational purposes, providing reimbursement for industry certification exam fees, and any other form of educational experience. The only limit is that the funds and purchased equipment must be used solely and exclusively for education purposes and can not benfit the union or the employers in any other manner. All funds that spent by the trust fund must be approved ahead of time by the Training Trustees.
The Education Coordinator is employeed by the San Diego Theatrical Training Trust Fund, and acts as the liazon between the trust and IATSE Local 122. The education coordinator is responsibile for maintaining education budgets, class databases, administrative support for class organization, communication between IATSE organizers and the SDTTTF, equipment inventory, and is the primary point of contact for all education related communications.
